Furnace stopped in the middle of winter? Do this first

HVAC Tips By Ali

A furnace that stops on a cold night is stressful, but many no-heat calls have a simple cause. Work through this list before you call.

Safety first

If you smell gas, leave the house immediately and call the gas utility from outside. If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone outside and call 911.

Quick checks

  • Thermostat on Heat, set above room temperature, with fresh batteries
  • The furnace service switch on
  • No tripped breaker
  • A filter that is not completely clogged
  • Intake and exhaust pipes outside clear of snow and ice

Keep the house warm while you wait

Close curtains, keep interior doors open so heat spreads, and open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls to protect pipes.

Still no heat? Call the Bluefire Air 24/7 line. Plan members never pay overtime.
